How to Fix a Broken iPhone Screen

You feel something crunch during a game of flag football, reach down and-oops-you forgot to take your iPhone out of your pocket. Now you've got an expensive but useless paperweight, and you're not going to be happy.
If you've got a broken iPhone screen, you know that helpless feeling that only comes from being a trendsetter without his trend. C'mon, we've all been there, there's no shame in it. You may be shocked to find out that the cost of fixing it is somewhere close to the cost of replacing the whole product-around $250, according to Apple Care.

You can find the service for less, depending on where you get it done, of course, as some independent websites offer much better pricing. Rapid repair websites, an iPod, iPhone  offers the service for $200, which is a bit easier to take.

Still, you might feel that a broken iPhone screen shouldn't cost $200, even if the parts are proprietary and the process complicated. You might feel like it shouldn't cost $100, or even--$10.

The $5 iPhone Screen Quick Fix

Well, you're in luck. Epic Proportions, a user on the somethingawful.com forums, has made a guide to replacing an iPhone touch-screen for about $5, provided that you already have a dremel and that you're somewhat handy.

Fix a cracked iPhone screen on the cheap ArsTechnica

The process involves cutting out the broken iPhone glass with a razorblade, removing excess glue with some Goo Gone, and cutting a piece of plastic (which you can get at any hardware store) to fit the shape of the phone, then rounding the edges with the dremel and shading the appropriate parts of the screen black. The step by step is contained at the link above, if you'd like some more specific instructions.

Glass Screen Protector for iPhone scratch proof protect from screen damage crack

Your iPhone will be less resistant to scratches, and it won't look like new except from a distance, but since the alternative is paying about $250, it's a real bargain and not that hard to pull off. Epic Proportions reports that the touch screen works fine after the hack is completed.

I tested this by replacing the screen on a similar touch device, a GPS, using the same method, and it seemed to work, although the iPhone hack certainly requires a bit more skill with a drevel, and it voids your warranty-though if your screen is broken, the warranty is probably void already. Call Apple to find out.

If you've done this quick fix, post any tips you have.

How to Prevent Scratches on Your iOS / Android Smartphone Screen

iOS / Android smartphones are expensive gadgets and you should treat it with care. One of the biggest problems you might be faced with is the number of scratches that can occur because of everyday use of the phone. Once the screen gets scratched too much, you might find it difficult to see what you are doing when attempting to use it. That is unacceptable because it renders the phone useless.

Here is how to prevent scratches on your  iOS / Android Smartphone screen:
Phone Case: Purchase and use a phone case for your  iOS / Android phone. These cases are meant to help protect your phone from getting scratched up. You can then feel safe in putting the Android in your purse or pockets without it getting scratched. This is one accessory that every cell phone user should have, not just Android owners.

Storage: When you put your phone away, put it away in a place where nothing will rub against the screen. Your Android screen is very sensitive to scratches. Don't slip it into your back pocket or your purse without protecting the screen. Lay the phone so that the screen faces upwards at all times. This will keep any debris or other articles from harming the  iOS / Android screen.

Screen Protectors: There are screen protectors that will help keep your  iOS / Android from getting scratched. They come in packs of three and can be purchased from the store. In fact, you can purchase them from many other locations as well, including kiosks in your local mall. The screen protector will prevent anything coming into contact with your Android smartphone's screen thus keeping it safe from scratches.

Kids: Keep your  iOS / Android out of the hands of your children. It's a phone, a very expensive phone. Your children shouldn't be using it as a toy. Keep it out of reach of small children especially. They don't know that they are scratching the surface of your Android's screen and they don't care. They just think it's a cool toy.

Being Careful: The best way to ensure that you don't get scratches on your  iOS / Android smartphone is to be as careful as you can about using it. Don't do things that you know could harm the surface of your phone. Use the pad of the finger to maneuver the screen instead of the fingernail. Never use objects to manipulate the touch screen other than objects that are specifically made for it. That means your fingers. Being careful at all times is the best way to prevent scratches from occurring to your  iOS / Android phone.

Scratches on your  iOS / Android smartphone can easily occur if you aren't careful. It is extremely aggravating to get scratches on the screen of your phone to the point that you can't see what you are doing. Follow the tips above for helping to prevent scratches for a longer life on your  iOS / Android phone.

How to Troubleshoot a Smartphone

"Jump Start" Procedure for a Smartphone

A Smartphone doesn't seem very intelligent when you discover that it won't do what you want it to do. Before you grab your eyeglasses and magnifying glass [some of the print in the owner's manual that came with your equipment is difficult to read without one] take a few minutes and try to diagnose the problem yourself. You'll soon discover that the components that make up a Smartphone work differently than the cell phones of the past.

Reboot Procedure

Follow the procedure that power's off your phone. Wait about two minutes and then power on your phone. Sometimes you need to reboot your Smartphone, for the same reason you often need to reboot your computer.

Soft Reset

Open the cover to the phone's battery compartment - make sure to turn the phone off before you remove the cover. Gently lift the battery out of the phone. Wait two minutes and then reinstall the Smartphone battery and fasten the cover to the battery compartment; Turn the phone back on. Check to see if the phone works properly.

Download Process

Check your owner's manual for the website of your Smartphone's manufacturer. Find the troubleshooting index and look for a reference to a system reset. If a reset program is available follow the instructions carefully. If a reset program does not exist, follow the troubleshooting steps outlined in your manual.

Technical Service

Locate your merchandise receipt and all "extra" items you may have purchased with the phone and revisit the Smartphone seller. Explain the problem you have with the phone and ask for a resolution.

Smartphone Tech Problems: What to Do and How to Get Help

It's really frustrating when your smartphone - the bridge that closes the gap between your clients, friends, etc. - isn't working. Your phone you cannot make or take calls. The integrated speaker, microphone, and even the display have died out.

It's easy to go ballistic and bonkers. But keep calm and follow the steps below before calling your phone's support team.

Running An Initial Diagnosis
Your phone's internet workings are complex, but it is nowhere near as complicated as a PC's. With that in mind, there are a few things you can do to pinpoint and maybe even fix the problem without the need for waiting on the phone for hours.

First, try to check the firmware of your phone. If it's not up to date, try to get the latest firmware patch and updates from the internet. If that doesn't cut it, take off and replace the following components one at a time to isolate the problem:

  • - SIM card

  • - Battery pack

  • - Any storage medium or device (ex.: SD Cards)

If, after removing and replacing the components above, your phone is still malfunctioning, it's time to call for help. But who do you call - the manufacturer or your mobile phone contractor?

Making The Call - Some Important Reminders
Before anything else, you should call your cell phone contractor and not the manufacturer. Because often warranty services for mobile phones are from your contractor and not directly from the manufacturer. An exception is the Apple iPhone, since Apple itself takes over the handling support issues.

If it turns out that your phone has a manufacturing error that has affected other units of the same model, getting it fixed by bringing your phone directly to the branch of your mobile phone contractor will cost less time and hassle. The technician, first, has to see the phone and check it up personally to process a warranty or replacement request. Once you're there however, it's very easy to arrange for a replacement unit, and it saves you days of waiting time.

Learning to Use a SmartPhone so Easy a Toddler Can Do It

Adults around the world who will not buy an iPhone or any other smart gadget, and use the excuse they will not be able to learn how to do it, listen up. My 3-year-old toddler has learned how to use the iPhone without any help from her parents, in less than a year. So if, using this excuse listen up, and learn how my daughter has accomplished this. If her techniques are copied, then anyone could be on the same road to using any smart phone. However, she has made phone calls it is usually to the wrong person unless their picture is next to it. She knows how to open and play all the games, music, weather, email, text, and how to mute the phone. Did I mention she can do all this without knowing how to read?

My daughter can use the iPhone, because she has learned what works through trial and error. While the callbacks from people you do not want to talk to are annoying, no one should have any problems learning the same way. I can give some pointers on working the iPhone that helped my daughter.

Look at the application symbols that are displayed on the phone. These symbols represent what the program does. If wanting to listen to music on your phone, then look for the symbol that shows a musical note. If wanting to check the weather then look for the sun or clouds on the phone. This basic recognition process has allowed me to listen to my own radio DJ, without having to push a button.

Everyone must remember they are not going to break the phone by pushing a bunch of buttons. The best way to learn is through making mistakes. If an elderly man accidentally opens the weather app when trying to make a phone call, two lessons have been learned. He now knows where the weather application is, and that button does not make phone calls.

My daughter also displays a trait that a lot of people do not. Do not be afraid of these advanced electronic devices. While she just does not know better. The people, who refuse to buy an iPhone, usually do not buy them in fear. The iPhone is not going to bite. Anyone learning these smart phones is not going to be considered less of a person. Just because someone needs help learning a new device.

It is essential to remember that no one learns these new smart phones overnight. Most people need weeks to figure out everything these smart phones do. In fact, my daughter can do some things on the iPhone that I did not know could be done. I grew up in the middle of this smart phone age, and even I do not know how to work the majority of these smart devices.

Why Smartphone Prices Are Set to Drop Dramatically

Changes Income and Saturation of Market Likely to Cause Phone Prices to Fall

Let's face it, smartphones have become ubiquitous-people are using them for everything from making calls, texting and chatting, to looking for restaurants. places to hook up and driving directions. But using a smartphone is still relatively expensive. First there is the cost of the phone, then the cost of the plan. Up till now, people have been willing to foot that bill. But there are signs that may change soon as people find it harder to make a living in the post-recession era. Just recently, the Associated Press published a report noting that 4 out of 5 adults in America are struggling with joblessness, poverty or are living on government assistance. When it comes to choosing between paying the rent versus the phone bill, the rent is eventually going to win out.

But there's another factor at play-the pervasiveness of the cell/smart phone has led to an inevitable saturation point. At some point in time, everyone that is going to buy a smartphone has done so. When that happens, phone purchases level off as first time buyers disappear, leaving just sales of upgrades. One indication that this is occurring now, is the recent price drop announced by Blackberry. Not only did the company drop the price of its phone, more tellingly, it dropped the price on its service contracts as well. Indications are that others will soon follow suit. As part of its announcement, Blackberry hinted that smartphone customers have grown weary of paying too much of their disposable income for a device that isn't actually necessary to conduct their lives-in other words, smartphones are still a luxury item, and because of that, they have the choice of simply discontinuing service and living without one. Simple economics dictates that when demand drops, so too do prices.

There are also signs that prepaid phones will cause service contract prices to drop. As more consumers find they are having trouble paying for high service contracts, they opt for prepaid phones and cards. Recently, most of the major carriers began offering prepaid plans, hoping to cash in on the recent trend. Smaller companies too have entered the fray which means the price of those prepaid cards at Wal-Mart, 7-11 and other outlets will soon fall as well, putting additional pressure on companies trying to survive on their service plans alone.

Taken together, it appears that consumers will be the winners as service carriers resort to price cutting as a means of retaining customers-a move that was seen in the long distance market after the breakup of AT&T. And that will surely lead to lower prices for phones as well as the cost of using them.

Is Cell Phone Use Dangerous During Pregnancy?

I never leave the house without my cell phone. That's in sharp contrast to my behavior years ago, when I often didn't even know where my mobile phone was (and if I did, it certainly wasn't charged). Cell phones and smartphones have become to adults today what computers were just over a decade ago. Still, the debate rages on about their safety. If you're considering becoming pregnant, or are pregnant now, you may be curious about the risks, if any, to your unborn baby from your cell phone usage.

The studies

One of the most widely touted studies about cell phone use and unborn children was done in 2010 and published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. It found a correlation between cell phone use in mothers and some behavioral problems in children. However, the study reported some limitations (size, when the cell phone exposure occurred, etc.) and there's no clear cause and effect relationship demonstrated. A follow-up study with the same participants is planned.

Another, more recent, study published in 2012 found that cell phone exposure altered the brains of pregnant rats. Further examination of these results is needed.

The risks

Though there is still some evidence that your cell phone usage could cause cancer, there isn't any evidence that the risk translates your baby. There's currently no known risk of birth defects caused by cell phone usage during pregnancy, which should also be a big relief for expectant mothers. The risk of behavior problems later in life (including attention, hyperactivity, and social issues) is still unconfirmed.

Another potential risk? Cell phone use could also impact the amount of melatonin passed on to your unborn baby, impacting sleep cycles.

The verdict

Since there's not enough evidence at this point to create a clear link between cell phone use in expectant mothers and problems with children, you should feel relatively comfortable dialing away. If you spend an excessive amount of time on your smartphone, you may want to consider cutting back your usage during pregnancy. Alternately, consider using a hands-free headset and skip the use of your belly as a phone rest.

If you have any concerns, you can mention your cellular phone usage to your doctor or midwife at an early prenatal appointment, just in case new studies or evidence to the contrary come to light.

Of all the things you need to cut out cold turkey during pregnancy, it doesn't look like your smartphone or cell phone need to be one of them. Until firm evidence to the contrary appears, don't expect moms-to-be to put down those phones just yet.

The Five Reasons Why You Need Tablet PCs and Smartphones

Computers Just Aren't Enough Now

At one point in the time, computers used to be sufficient for business and personal uses. From desktop computers at home to notebooks in coffee shops for traveling businessmen, no one really thought that there was any need to other system to fulfill our technological needs.

Times have, however, changed, and now, the technological culture demands the presence of two major types of devices - tablet PCs and smartphones.

1. Everywhere Anywhere (speed and access)

There are so many reviews and comparisons out on Web about smartphones and tablet PCs now. They are living evidences on how common and mundane these devices have become. Walk into any college campus today - you will undoubtedly see popular smartphones like iPhones, Samsung Galaxy SII, Motorola's Razr, and so on. The number of tablet PCs has increased as well, and Apple's iPad now faces fierce competitions from Samsung's Galaxy Tab, Blackberry's Playbook, and just recently,Microsoft announced its own tablet PC called surface with upcoming Windows 8.

These smartphones and tablet PCs have gained popularity because they are fast and allow access to a wide range of entertainments. If one can think of a use, there is usually an app for that action or thought in the Android or iTunes app stores. Checking e-mails and browsing web are only small part of this new technology.

2. Entertainment for Everyone
More specifically, smartphones are known for some of their addicting mobile games, such as Angry Birds, Temple Run, 100 Floors and so on. Tablet PCs also share similar arena of apps for games, movies, comics, and countless features to spend the time. Some apps are free while others only require small amount of money compared to the cost incurred for computer games and videogames.

3. Work at Home, Office, etc
On the other side of benefits for smartphones and tablet PCs is the usefulness in workplaces. All of these devices usually accommodate files in PDF, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and various audio and visual files. With the use of apps like Dropbox, it is easy to make "take outs" (like in fast foodrestaurants) for important files from work to home and vice versa. They do not replace the necessity of computers for typing reports and analyzing complex data in Excel, but what smartphones and tablet PCs allow suffice the needs for people traveling for business meetings and conferences.

4. Keep yourself updated with info (apps)
Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, and other social media apps have become quicker than mainstream news. This is because with smartphones and tablet PCs, all the information you need at that instant moment can be gained with just a touch. This rapid accessibility to latest news is assisted by apps for individual newspapers and magazines, and some comprehensive media apps like Pulse that "pull" headlines.

5. Connected with others
Whether it's with your best friend from elementary school or the love of your life from your favorite TV show, the connection made possible under smartphones and tablet PCs changed the way people responded to each other. For a lot of younger generations, calling has been replaced by Facebook chat app in smartphones or face-to-face Skype in tablet PCs, and of course, unlimited texting that can now even take place with people overseas (KakaoTalk app).

The technology has not only changed, but evolved. Smartphones and tablet PCs did not just replace computers - they became computers and much more.

Best Social Media Apps and Hacks...No Smartphone Required!

Scheduling on Google Plus, posting to Instagram and Vine without a phone, and more

I'm going to give you insights about tools that will make your social media marketing a million times easier (and cooler). I'm also going to suggest some tools and applications that let you [legally] hack your Instagram and Vine accounts in order to create great content. You'll be able to focus less on the technical aspects of social media and more on the fun process of creating and interacting with your audience after reading this article.

Scheduling Posts to Google Plus Profiles and Pages
Later Edit: Unfortunately Google Plus is no longer available since April 2019.
The Do Share app is a Google Plus scheduler available through the Chrome Web Store. At first, it was not able to function unless Google Chrome would be running, but the app description now indicates that it works offline. Additionally, it's compatible with multiple Google+ profiles and posting to communities. Users can also save drafts to resume for later scheduling.

HootSuite and Buffer have been the leading social media management applications for several years, and so it was about time that they got on board by allowing posts to Google Plus pages from their platforms. If your business has a Google Plus page (not a profile) then you will want to use one of these programs instead.

Social Media Marketing Workbook: How to Use Social Media for Business 2019 Update

Creating and Posting to an Instagram Account from a Computer

Just because people don't have smartphones doesn't mean they have to be excluded from all the fun on Instagram. Pixsta was created to let users create profiles and post their pics from the comfort of a computer. Of course, phones are convenient tools for capturing and preserving moments on the go, but not everyone has the capability to make that happen. PCs and Macs are forever the fallback technology to save the day when phones don't quite make the cut.

Ways to Create Vines without a Smartphone

My all-time favorite of this list is VineClient. Pretty much anything that can be done on Vine from the smartphone can be done from this app too. (Note: this is a good alternative for Windows Phone users who are frustrated by all the quirks and glitches of the beta Vine apps like 6sec.) Yes, VineClient even allows uploading custom videos. They just need to be under 5 MB. That's super easy to do on programs like Adobe Flash and PowerPoint, which is what I used for this particular vine.

Have you found any apps or third-party sites that make social media management easier?

Have you tried any of the above programs as well? Tell me what you think and connect with me on Google Plus, Instagram, and Vine.

The Ultimate Guide to Smartphone Alternatives

There is no doubt that with the dawn of Apple's  iPhone came a smartphone craze that has revolutionized the cell phone industry. But let's face it, with the recent down curve of the worldwide economy, who want's to pay $80-$120 a month for mobile Internet access, e-mail, talk and text? That is $960-$1,440 yearly just for a computer in your pocket!

Oh yeah, and that's not including the taxes and fees that add up to about $15 monthly ($180 yearly). The sad part is that now all cell phone companies require you to have a data plan with a smartphone (Even unlocked phones). Translation: if you own a smartphone, your are forced to pay the $960-$1440 yearly, just for mobile access to e-mail and the Internet. By the way, did I mention that with most data plans, you are also paying for unlimited text, something you may not even use?

Now that we've identified the problem, we'll identify the (Many) solutions. If you want to save $360-$840 a year then you may want to consider the following:

An iPod Touch:

In a few words, the iPod touch is essentially an iPhone without the phone. You have complete access to the app store, and the pod has wi-fi, which means access to the internet, email, and YouTube. There is also a tiny mic available from USB Fever http://www.usbfever.com/index_eproduct_view.php?products_id=662 (You won't need one for the third generation 32 and 64 GB), so combined with the already built in speakers, the txtdrop app http://www.txtdrop.com/iphone-app.php and the Skype app http://www.skype.com/download/skype/iphone/, you can use your iPod as a smartphone!

I must also note that I've used my touch to write plays, proposals, and even essays using the notepad app, so its great for students. Oh, and it is still a music player!

More Information & Review: http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/

The Zune HD:

The Zune HD is Microsoft's answer to Apple's I-pod touch. The Zune HD, like its competitor, is basically a smart mp3 player, but unlike its competitor includes a FM/HD radio and high definition graphics great for watching video, playing games, checking e-mail and web browsing (Wi-fi). With a download of zNotes, a notepad app, you can compose essays, poetry or whatever you want on your zune. The only drawback is Zune's lack of apps which are still in development and will be available by the end of the year. Still if you are attracted to cheaper price tags ($189 for a 16GB player) and superior audio-visual performance, I'd give the Zune HD a go.

An Internet Tablet/MID/UMPC:

Internet tablets, also known as "Mobile Internet Devices" (MID), are multimedia enabled, handheld computers with wireless web browsing abilities (Wi-fi). They are meant for personal mobile computing, rather than professional mobile computing, so they are perfect for students and busy house moms or dads. Since you can connect to the internet, you can also check e-mail on-the-go. Most MIDs on the market are in the slider form factor with a QWERTY keyboard and touchscreen. In terms of size, MIDs tend to be slightly bigger than smartphones so they fit perfectly in purses, backpacks, or briefcases. Best of all, many high quality versions are available for under $300, so you can probably afford one.

UMPCs are slightly bigger than MIDs and can function the way larger sized laptops can, with some models including a disk drive. The only down side: they generally cost as much as laptops do, which is well into the thousands.

For functionality and affordability check out these: SmartQ 7  or Q 5, Archos 5 (http://www.archos.com/products/imt/archos_5/), Sony Mylo 2 , Nokia N810 (http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/N810/)

List of available MIDs/UMPCs http://www.umpcportal.com/products/

A Netbook:

Netbooks, commonly known as mini-laptops or "laptots", are very small, lightweight versions of their larger cousins, the laptop. These things are so small, they can fit in your bag! Netbooks are designed for mobile internet access, e-mail and computing, so most models have a Wi-fi and bluetooth, and allow you to create and edit documents on the go. Most models also include a webcam, so you can chat on the go. The best thing about laptots are the small price tag, some even costing less than smartphones, so I would take advantage of holiday sales or eBay to get one even cheaper.

Check out these brands: Acer, HP , and Asus (http://asus.com/ProductGroup1.aspx?PG_ID=7dDelmkESu9DXgVB - Under the Eee PC 9" & 7" catagories)

The Peek Device:

The Peek is a smartphone-sized QWERTY device that allows you to e-mail on the go, with nationwide coverage, for $19.95 monthly (No contract or taxes). The Peek Pronto, a newer version of the classic Peek, allows you to text message and e-mail for the same, $19.95 monthly. Don't want to pay to use the device monthly? No problem! An offer from amazon https://www.amazon.com/Peek-Messaging-Lifetime-Service-Included/dp/B002MXXBKY/ allows you to purchase the Peek for $299.95 and you can email and text message for life. This offer also covers any future device upgrades, so you'll never have to pay a monthly fee again. Many features include directions, weather, news, and local search via the askpeek service. The Peek is a great way to stay connected to your e-mail 24/7, if Wi-fi and hotspots are not an option.

A Handheld Organizer:

The original PDA (Personal Digital Assistant), these devices have evolved into handheld computers thanks to the recent smartphone boom. Most handheld organizers nowadays run on windows mobile and can also play video and music. Also, many have Wi-fi and email access so you can browse the web and check your email. Sound familiar? Of course it does! The features on these devices are the same as any windows mobile phone the only difference is...they aren't cell phones and thus no monthly bill.

Check out these brands: Hp iPAQ (https://store.hp.com/us/en?jumpid=re_r11662_redirect_ETR), Asus Mypal (https://www.asus.com/us/)

What to look for in PDAs

Best (Phoneless) PDAs  https://www.consumersearch.com/smartphones

All these options paired with a good messaging phone http://www.straighttalk.com/ allow you to have access to all smartphone features, without the smartphone bill. While some may argue that the beauty of the smartphone is the combination of the cellphone with a computer, not everyone has to agree. At the end of the day with a smartphone you will always have to subscribe to expensive data services to be able to use it. Even with these great alternatives, is it worth it? You decide! As for me, a Straight Talk phone and a Nokia N810 (http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/N810/) will do just fine =).

Break Free from Your Smartphone

Ten Ways to Break Free from Your Smartphone: You Can Do It

Smartphones are extremely popular in the world today. Just take a look around you.
You will often see someone using an iPhone or Droid.
These phones combine the usefulness of a mobile phone with the abilities of a portable computer.
Smartphones can access the Internet, take pictures and even talk to you. The downside is that these phones can be addictive.
They can consume our daily lives. But you can do something about it. Here are ten ways to break free from your smartphone.

10. Check at intervals.
It is not necessary to check your phone every time it beeps. Try checking it at intervals, maybe every hour or so?
Besides, if someone really needs you, they will call.

9. Turn it off in the car.
Turn your phone off in the car. This could save your life. In January 2010, the National Safety Council reported that 28% of all car crashes involved mobile phones and texting. In some states, it is illegal to use your phone while driving.

8. Delete some apps.
Do you really need all of those apps on your smartphone? The games may be fun, but they are major time-wasters.
Eliminate some of your distractions and delete some apps. You can do it.

7. Detach it from your body.
If your phone is constantly on your body, you will continue to be a slave to it. Take it off and put it down.
Your phone is not going anywhere. You can always come back to it later.

6. It may be bad for your health.
Research has shown that mobile phone usage may have adverse effects on your health. It could contain bacteria, distract you or even hurt your thumbs.

5. If you need a computer, use a computer.
Your home computer can do almost everything that your smartphone can, and better.
Become less dependent on your phone by using your computer to check e-mails, adjust your calendar or surf the Internet.

4. Get a real camera.
Your phone may be able to take pictures. But a digital camera can take better ones. Get a good digital point-and-shoot or SLR camera and see a world of difference.

3. Discover other ways to stay in touch.
There are other ways to text and chat with friends.
Computer programs like Skype and ooVoo are two great voice, video and chat programs. They are also free.

2. Ban mobile phones from the dinner table.
What ever happened to family time? There is no need to have mobile phones at the dinner table.
Dinner should be a time when the family comes together to eat, talk and enjoy each other. The smartphones can wait.

1. Invest your time in more important activities.
Think about how much time you spend on your smartphone.
Now think about all of the other things you could be doing instead. Spend time with your loved ones.
Learn a new skill. Develop a passionate hobby. Go outside and walk!
There are so many more rewarding things to do than fiddling with a smartphone.

Smartphones are useful and oftentimes necessary in our daily lives.
But do not let them consume you. Take time to enjoy the things that the smartphone has made you forget.

The concept of tethering Android tablets or your touch screen tablet to your cell phone offers a number of advantages and improves the versatility of the device. Tethering is convenient and once again stretches the capabilities of everyday technology to make our lives easier than ever.

What does it actually mean to "tether" one mobile device to another? And why would we even care about doing this? Before digging a bit deeper into the advantages of tethering your Android tablet to your smart phone, let's look at the commonly accepted definition for tethering so that we are all on the same wavelength.

According to Wikipedia: "Tethering is the use of a mobile device such as a mobile phone to supply internet access for another device which is otherwise unconnected, using the mobile device as a modem. This can be done through Bluetooth wireless technology or cables (such as USB)." Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tethering

It is easy to see why tethering would be of use to us. Tethering allows you to connect your Android tablet to the internet via your cell phone's built in 3G connection. The recent explosion of the touch screen tablet craze, tethering gives us the ability to save money and hassle by not paying for monthly internet subscriptions for all of our devices. Tethering makes for the most cost effective use of a smart phone.

Tethering Android tablets to a smart phone is useful in emergencies when one needs reliable, fast online access and the nearby Wi-Fi connection is weak or non-existent. Tethering an Android touch screen tablet to a smart phone is great for business people who travel frequently or find themselves needing internet access in normally inconvenient situations. Tethering can bail one out of emergency situations if the internet connection at home is down.

Another advantage to tethering is that it is an ideal option for those who don't like the potential security issues of public Wi-Fi. Tethering is much more secure and allows complete privacy when handling confidential work or other files.

With all the tethering software available and the easy, widespread use of Android, tethering is a very viable option indeed as there is plenty of support in case difficulties arise. Tethering is definitely the next step in advancing smart phone and internet tablet technology. Tethering proves that the way we access the internet expands and gets better each and every day.

Fashion Tips for the Well-Dressed Man

10 Clothing Items Every Man Needs to Dump Before Turning 30

As you get older, you will inevitably outgrow some of your favorite clothes. I am not referring to physically outgrowing your wardrobe, but rather "outgrowing" trends that you are now too old, err too mature to wear anymore. There are some clothing items and fashion styles that you have to part with, especially if you are a young man approaching 30 years old. Doing away with the following 10 clothing items ensures that you dress acceptably for your age and that your peers, potential mates, employers, and business clients view you as a serious young professional.

Ironic Tee Shirts

Ironic tee shirts should be shed from your wardrobe immediately before your 30th birthday. Sure, they are funny when you are in your 20s, but potential mates will think you are a perennial Silver Lake hipster if you are wearing them to the local coffee house after your 30th, or 25th, birthday.

Statement Shades

A good pair of Ray Bans does a perfect job of protecting your eyes from harsh ultraviolet rays. Wearing shutter shades does nothing to protect your eyes and may make others question your vision or sobriety.

Branded Sport Coats

Sport coats emblazoned with the fleur-de-lis or dragons had a brief period of popularity in the middle of the 2000s, but the fashion trend was more of a fashion faux-pas. If you are in college or partying in a nightclub on South Beach then maybe it is permissible. Maybe. Otherwise, this trend sends others the message that you are auditioning for the "Jersey Shore." On the other end of the style spectrum sits blazers decorated with preppy crests. This may have been great for preppy themed fraternity parties, but once you're in the "real world" you should do away with such clothing as it may signal that you are still in prep school.

Skinny Jeans

In some circles, skinny jeans are all the rage. Wearing them is a matter of taste, but once you hit the big 3-0, you should start wearing nicely tailored jeans. Skinny jeans do not qualify as "nicely tailored" clothing.

Puka Shells

Puka shell necklaces come in and out of fashion but they do not belong around the neck of a grown man. Maybe you had a bit of a surfer boy phase in your mid-20s when you were "figuring it out," but do away with them as you approach your 30th birthday…unless you are auditioning for the role of Matthew McConaughey's little brother in the sequel to "Surfer, Dude."

Flip Flops

Men don't exactly have attractive feet. It's an indisputable fact. Flip flops are okay when you're in college, but wearing them after that tells the world that you are putting in the least amount of effort possible. Keep a pair or two around for beach excursions, but make sure you are not wearing them after your 20s have become little more than a memory.

Men sneakers

Sneakers

Sneakers are perfectly acceptable clothing for the gym and while running marathons. You are not running marathons in blue jeans or doing squats in chinos so make sure that you keep your sneakers in the locker at your gym so you don't accidentally wear them with non-workout clothes. Seinfeld was about the only man in his 30s who could successfully don that look, and that is even debatable.

Croakies

Croakies are a great and practical accessory when you are out on the boat since they keep you from losing your sunglasses. While they have become a staple of the frat-boy uniform, they should be retired once you reach a certain age, especially if you are on solid ground…unless you are really paranoid about random earthquakes occurring…in which case you probably have more concerns than your sunglasses.

Graphic Tees

Affliction, TapOut, and Ed Hardy shirts have become ubiquitous in some circles. The thing is that once you start approaching your 30s, you should start realizing that you are paying a premium for a shirt that essentially advertises someone else's brand. Why would a grown man give his hard-earned money to wear clothes that do nothing but shill another's goods? Exactly. Unless you are a brand ambassador, let someone else do the advertising for these brands.

Leather Cuffs

When you are young and trendy and trying to show people how "hard" you are, leather cuffs seem like a solid fashion selection. The problem is that once you hit a certain age, you should not be trying to show people how "rebellious" and "hard" you are. You know what's hard? Working and paying bills. That's hard and actions speak louder than words.

Guidelines to Help You Channel Your Inner Don Draper

Fashion is mostly subjective but there are a few firm guidelines worth following if you wish to achieve a distinguished and dapper image. Don Draper from television's "Mad Men" has these rules of thumb down to the point that it is almost a science and any man can achieve a similar level of style and sophistication by merely being aware of the subtleties that create a well-dress gentleman. These ten fashion guidelines will help you achieve a put-together look while also projecting power and class; heed this advice and you will look like you walked off the pages of Esquire magazine.

Sometimes, Always, Never

Many men are often confused about which buttons they should fasten on their three-button suit coats and sport coats. I cannot tell you how many times I was asked about this when working high-end retail at one of the nation's finest haberdasheries.

The top button can sometimes be closed but only if the lapel features a distinct crease and even then it is generally shied away from; coats with softly folded lapels do not ever lend themselves to fastening the top button.

All three-button coats are made to allow for buttoning the middle button so this is always safe. Under no circumstances should the bottom button of a three-button coat be fastened. The panels of suit coats and sport coats are not cut with the intention of having the bottom button fastened and doing so throws off the proper fit of the coat, making it fall awkwardly and pull. Just remember from top to bottom: Sometimes, always, never.

You may be asking how this applies to four-button coats. It doesn't and unless you are Michael Irvin you should stay away from four-button coats because they are generally considered costume pieces.

Proportion Is Everything

It is important to pay attention to pattern proportion when pairing patterns together in order to avoid creating a dizzying image. When coordinating ties, shirts, and coats, make sure that the proportion of each piece's pattern does not match or you could risk giving an office colleague a seizure.

For instance, if your shirt is a fine check then ensure that you pair it with a tie with a significantly broader pattern or else your clothing ensemble will take on the aesthetic of those old "Magic Eye" posters from grade school. In terms of lapels, ties, and collars, do the opposite; make sure the shapes are in proportion. If you're wearing a coat with a narrow lapel, make sure that your tie and collar also err on the narrower end of the spectrum, conversely broad lapels call for wider ties and thicker collars.

To Cuff or Not to Cuff, That is the Question

Flat front pants can be cuffed or finished with a plain hem, but the plain hem is generally the preferred option. The plain hem lets the pant leg fall naturally and keeps with the streamlined aesthetic of a flat front pant. Pleated pants should always be cuffed at the bottom. The extra weight of the cuff creates the proper drape for pleated pants and the extra thickness around the hem creates a visual balance with the pleats.

Suits and Separates Should Stay Separate

Suit coats should only be worn with the pants they were originally paired with from the factory. This allows the coat and pants to wear evenly and prevents garish pairings. The patterns of suits are not meant to be matched with other dress pants or sport coats so avoid this common mistake by keeping your suit coats and trousers together and only pairing sport coats with separate dress slacks.

Button-down Collars

While many men wear button-down collars with a coat and tie this look is for casual occasions only and should never be worn in the office and certainly not during power meetings. The look can be donned with chinos or Nantucket reds for a traditional preppy look but avoid pairing button-down collars with true dress slacks or suits.

The button-down collar does not have the crisp appearance of a true dress shirt collar and tends to roll when paired with a tie and sport coat. Nothing exudes power and sophistication like a firm collar falling crisply under a sport coat with a nicely knotted tie occupying the space between the collar spread.

The Brown Shoe Myth

Some believe that brown shoes are not dressy and should only be worn with earth tones and never with grey or black dress clothing. This is merely a myth and it is not a fashion faux-pas to don brown or caramel colored dress shoes with a grey pair of dress slacks or a black pinstripe suit. In fact, this is look is very European and considered very chic by the fashion-conscious Italians and GQ magazine.

Matt Lauer is known for frequently sporting this distinct fashion-forward look. Now don't get crazy and start wearing brown shoes with black-tie formal wear or anything and always remember to match your belt to your shoes.

Leather-Soled Dress Shoes

Many men shy away from leather-soled dress shoes fearing discomfort and the cost. A well-made leather-soled dress shoe that is properly fitted to your foot should not be uncomfortable.

Unfortunately, many men have been driven away from proper dress shoes because of a previous bad experience with ill-fitting shoes or shoes constructed around a poorly built last. In terms of cost, a leather-soled shoe should be viewed as an long-term wardrobe investment, helping justify the higher upfront cost.

Clarks Men's Tilden Cap Oxford Shoe

Rubber-soled shoes are disposable and usually thrown away after a year of wear; once the sole is done then the shoe is junk. Shoes with leather bottoms can be re-soled as needed, meaning that with proper care and upkeep you can own those shoes for much longer - sometimes even decades - offsetting that higher initial cost of entry since you are not having to buy an entire new pair of shoes every time the sole wears out.

Women and people in power also tend to notice subtle details like the construction of shoes and leather-soled shoes convey a sense of sophistication and an appreciation for quality.

Clothing Maneuverability

Another fashion myth that must be dispelled regards maneuverability. There is a widely held notion that European-cut slim-fitting suits somehow decrease maneuverability. This could not be further from the truth.

Obviously, wearing clothing that is too tight will inhibit your ability to move around in comfort, but properly fit clothes that feature a slim cut actually allow the body to move more easily than do baggy or loose-fitting clothes due to the form fitting nature of the slim-cut. You will also look like a well put together gentleman in your finely tailored dress clothing.

Dark Solid Colored Dress Shirts

Just because a button-down shirt has a collar and long sleeves does not mean it's an appropriate dress shirt that can be paired with a suit or dress slacks and a sport coat. Avoid dark solid colored button-downs when donning a suit for a management meeting. Colors to avoid include burgundy, navy blue, and forest green.

Wearing these dark solid colored button-down shirts tends to evoke memories of television's Frasier, a man of taste but whose fashion is clearly from the '90s, or a character from "The Sopranos." Stick with traditional and proper dress shirt patterns or lighter solid colors for your power meetings during this decade.

Why Wear A Watch

In this day of the ubiquitous smartphone with its perfectly set clock it seems like a watch is just a superfluous accessory. While the pure utility of a watch may be in question, remember that it looks far crasser to pull out a phone to check the time than to casually glance at your wrist.

A tasteful timepiece is a completely acceptable and functional piece of jewelry for a gentleman to wear as a means of communicating a little personal style and taste. Nothing says "gentleman" like a low-profile dress watch or a classic sport watch subtly showing under your shirt cuff.

A well-chosen timepiece can actually be a great conversation starter, much more so than the current iteration of iPhone. Avoid watches with plastic bands, blinged out diamonds and those measuring over 44 mm in diameter and you will be fine.

Men’s Fashion: Essential Tips for a Summer Date

How to Keep Cool While Looking Hot

Summer dates present a unique conundrum for us men. Fall and winter dates are easier to dress for since those seasons traditionally dictate more formal fashion, making the wardrobe more clear cut. The warmth of the summer months inherently conditions us to dress more casually, but how do we dress for a summer date without looking sloppy?

The key here is to put together a nice sportswear ensemble, something that says you want to have fun and feel comfortable, while still looking good and presenting the best image possible for your date. How do you look good without looking like you're trying too hard? How do you get that debonair summer style without sweating? The forthcoming tips share a common thread: easy-to-wear style that shows your date that you put forth an effort while still retaining a casual cool vibe.

Shirt

Optimally, you should wear a long-sleeve button down shirt made of lightweight cotton or linen - avoid Oxford shirts during the summer months. Solid colors are safe, but you can add some personality with a fine-checked, gingham or striped shirt. Paul Smith also offers some bolder prints for the more daring, but don't turn the knob to 11.
Nat Nast or Tommy Bahama-style shirts are acceptable for older gents or those in tropical climates, but steer clear of any floral prints or large embroidery. You don't want to look like a retiree or a World Series of Poker competitor.

Mens Short Sleeve Shirts Linen Cotton

A golf shirt is the most casual shirt you should wear on a date, period; save the graphic and ironic tees for "brocations." "Love Kills Slowly" is not the message you want to project to your date. If you do go the casual golf shirt route, the logo should never be larger than your thumbnail - you're selling yourself, not a clothing brand.

Pants

Stick with solids here. Pinstripes are too formal and can make it look like you just left the office, while bold prints are too casual and draw too much attention for a date situation.
Ensure that your pants are made of a lightweight, breathable fabric so you don't sweat down there. Summer weight chinos from the J. Crew line are a trustworthy choice, while linen is a bit more distinguished, yet even more comfortable option.

Lightweight jeans can be worn, as well, but make sure that they are nicely hemmed and are a different pair than those in which you do your yard work. Any shade will do so long as the jeans don't have holes, but really light-colored or dark, raw denim tend to be the most suitable for dates since they stand out from so-called mom jeans.

Leave your little sister's jeans in her closet so that you leave something to your date's imagination. Conversely, you should avoid baggy denim or pants with a drastic drape. The key here is to wear a pair of well-tailored pants that let her see your silhouette without putting it all out on the table.

Shorts should only be worn during recreational activities. Pleats. Just no. Not under any circumstance. Ever.

Coat or Not?

A coat is optional, but donning a dapper jacket serves a two-fold purpose. First, a sport coat shows that you put forth effort and wanted to look your very best for the date. Second, should it get chilly later in the evening you can offer your date your coat, a classic act of chivalry.

Wear an unlined, unstructured sport coat for that summery gentleman look that will also allow maximum breath-ability. Seersucker adds a splash of Southern charm, but don't pair it with a patterned shirt or you will make your date dizzy.

Don't just take a suit coat off its hanger and throw it on with your summer date outfit. Women can tell that the coat is meant to be worn as part of a suit, making it look like you hurriedly threw the ensemble together from your work wardrobe.

A solid navy blue blazer is a safe choice, just don't wear one with a crest or shield or people will think that your date picked you up at a prep school.

Shoes

Women love shoes, but they also love to judge a man by his shoes. If you are going to splurge on any part of your summer date outfit, this is the piece.

A nicely made, leather-soled pair of slip-on dress shoes is the prime choice here. Add a bit of dressy sophistication by wearing bit-loafers or driving shoes.

Traditional lace-up dress shoes are also fine, but may come across as too formal for a summer date, and also make it more difficult to take your shoes off at the end of the night.
Those who live in coastal locations can consider a fresh pair of boat shoes from Sperry but only for more informal settings. Do not wear socks with them. Ever. Thank me later.
At all costs and with no exception, avoid sneakers, flip flops, canvas and Crocs. They have a place; it just isn't here.

Accessories

Add a pocket square to your sport coat to show some fashion sensibility and dapper style. It sounds silly, but your date will take note of the extra attention you put into looking your best and women love a well-coordinated man.

Leave your man jewelry at home. A classy wrist watch is fine, but the rest should be kept to a minimum so you don't upstage your date.

Match your belt to your shoes. Solid leather is fine, but leave the studded belts in your "80s night" pile and donate that braided belt to the Goodwill. Grosgrain ribbon belts are also suitable for those who want to give their outfit a nautical/preppy feel.

Skip the tie, unless you are attending a function that specifically requires one in the dress code.

Understanding What Makes a Modern Slim-Cut Suit

The Details Add Up to Create an Entirely Different Image

The modern slim-fit suit fits entirely differently than a suit from 10 or 20 years ago. Modern suits are not cut in a restrictive manner and should never fit tightly, but they are cut in a manner that hugs your body, giving a more flattering silhouette and actually affording you more mobility than a loose-fitting suit. Pay attention to the details when suit shopping and you can see how the overall feel of the suit adds up to more than the sum of the small refinements that have been made in the past few years. A suit is not just a suit and knowing what design subtleties create that unique modern cut suit will help you make sure you are buying a suit that is contemporary and has a long lifespan in your wardrobe.

Coat Fit

The overall fit of the suit coat has taken a more form-fitting shape. The shoulders of a modern suit should be unpadded and about an inch narrower than they used to be. Shoulder pads are out and have been for a while. Note the way the modern slim cut suit hugs the shape of your shoulder and the ease of arm mobility that this allows. The front panels of the suit should feel thinner and more forgiving due to thinner canvas and lining materials. The coat should have a natural "fall" to it and should not feel crisp.

Coat Cut

A modern suit should also have a smaller footprint in addition to its trimmer silhouette. In years past, suits were boxy and the coat was expected to cover your rear-end. A modern suit should be about an inch shorter than those from a decade ago. Look for the bottom of the coat to fall halfway down your buttocks. Any shorter and you look like you are auditioning for an emo band and any longer and you risk looking dated. Sleeves are easily alterable by your clothing store's tailor, but note that coat sleeves are now worn shorter than the traditional rule of thumb used to dictate. Ideally, you want to show a half inch to an inch of cuff, and have the coat sleeve fall at or just above your wrist.

Coat Design

Note the way a modern suit falls on your shirt/tie combination relative to the way they used to work together. That contemporary suit will have narrower lapels, keeping in proportion with the slimmer ties that are in fashion. You will also notice a lower button stance, exposing more shirt and tie. Two button suits are timeless and fit with this trend, while three button suits fall in and out of fashion.

Trouser Fit

Fitting with the modern fit of the coat, the fit of trousers has also trimmed down to a more form-fitting style. Flat front pants are the norm, but pleats can either be seen as more traditional or very high-fashion depending on the overall shape. Either way, ensure that the pant leg follows the shape of your legs and never becomes to billowy.

Trouser Tailoring

The traditional rule of thumb was that suit pants should fall directly at or above the heel of your shoe, but this has changed a bit since the turn of the century. Pants should fall just below the top of the shoe back. This allows for the sophisticated no break look, or for a subtle pant break at mid-shin. The lines of flat front pants flow most smoothly with an plain hem, that is a hem without a cuff. Pleats, however, leave the choice of pant bottom finishing solely up to personal preference.
